Alternative ways to beat the heat without excessive water use

When it’s hot out, we all look for ways to cool down, whether that’s jumping in a paddling pool, taking extra showers, or running the tap until it turns cold. This increase in demand comes at a time when the reserves of water in the environment are low, due to low rainfall levels, and can sometimes lead to low water pressure or supply interruptions in certain areas.

The good news is that there are plenty of simple ways to stay cool without using more water than you need. These small changes can help keep you comfortable while also protecting the environment.

Close the curtains

Keep blinds or curtains shut during the day to prevent your home from heating up. This simple step reduces the need for water-heavy cooling like showers or paddling pools to feel refreshed.

Cool down with a cold flannel

Dampen a flannel briefly under cold tap water and wring it out. Place it on your neck or wrists for an instant cool-down that uses just a tiny amount of water.

Make ice your friend

Keep a jug of chilled tap water in the fridge, adding ice cubes when you need to cool off. This helps you stay hydrated without running the tap unnecessarily.

Use shade outdoors

When spending time outside, stick to shaded spots like under trees or umbrellas. This keeps you cooler naturally.

Dress for the weather

Choose lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. Dressing appropriately helps your body stay cool without needing extra water for showers or baths. For tips on caring for your clothes in a water-wise way, see Are you washing your clothes wrong?

Re-think the paddling pool

Paddling pools can use hundreds of litres of water. Instead, try water play with buckets and sponges - fun and refreshing, but with much less waste.

Time your watering

If you need to water plants or gardens, do it early in the morning or late evening. This limits evaporation and makes every drop count. Put down the hosepipe where you can – we have all the tips for outdoor water use this summer.

Don’t pour water down the drain

Collect any excess water from cooking or washing (like rinsing vegetables or waiting for taps to cool/warm) and use it for watering plants instead of draining it away.

Remember: Water is precious, even when it’s raining

Rainfall doesn’t always mean local water sources are full. Much of our supplies come from underground chalk aquifers that take longer to recharge than surface water reservoirs. Groundwater levels are mostly topped up by winter rainfall, which supports levels the following summer.

Conserving water helps protect these vital ecosystems. When it does rain, be sure to use a water butt if you have one. If you don’t, you can buy a discounted water butt here.

We’re thankful for all your small changes so far

By making small changes, we can all help reduce pressure on our water supplies during the hottest months. This leaves more water available for homes, gardens, wildlife and the environment. You can find all our water-saving tips here.
