Hotter summers and heatwaves are becoming more common – and that means we’ll all be using more water. Whether it’s watering the garden, filling up a paddling pool, or washing the car, outdoor water use can really add up.
When everyone’s using more water at the same time, it puts pressure on the water network – and that can lead to low pressure or supply issues, because we can’t move water through our pipes quickly enough.
Small changes to your water usage habits can make a big difference, to the planet and your pocket. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to help you use water more efficiently outdoors this summer.

Step 1: Swap the hose for a watering can
Hosepipes use a lot of water – around 1,000 litres an hour! That’s more than a whole family might use in a day. Instead:
- Use a watering can to water your plants and aim water where it’s needed most.
- If you do use a hose, fit a trigger nozzle to control the flow.

Step 2: Water at the right time
Water your garden early in the morning or in the evening when it’s cooler. This helps:
- Reduce evaporation
- Make sure your plants get the most benefit

Step 3: Cover the soil
Add a layer of bark, compost, or even grass cuttings to the soil. This helps:
- Lock in moisture
- Keep roots cool
- Cut down how often you need to water

Step 4: Let your lawn go brown
Grass can survive dry spells. It might turn brown, but it will recover when it rains. To help it along:
- Don’t cut it too short
- Leave the clippings to protect the soil

Step 5: Use paddling pools wisely
Paddling pools use hundreds of litres of water. Try to:
- Only fill it once and reuse the water for a couple of days
- Cover it overnight to keep it clean
- Tip any leftover water onto your plants

Step 6: Wash the car with a bucket and sponge
Washing your car with a hose can use over 300 litres of water. Instead:
- Use a bucket and sponge
- Rinse with leftover rainwater if you can
