Sizzle smarter: BBQ tips that save water

As the sun graces us with its warm embrace, BBQ season is in full swing. While we relish the smoky aromas and the joy of outdoor gatherings, it's essential to remember that our water resources, especially the delicate chalk streams in our region, need our care. It’s easy to forget how much water we use during summer gatherings, but with a few small changes, we can help keep our local streams flowing and thriving - just as efforts like Affinity Water’s Save Our Streams campaign are encouraging us to do.

Here are some sizzling tips to help you save water while still enjoying your alfresco feasts:

1. Scrape, don’t rinse

After indulging in grilled delights, skip rinsing plates under the tap before loading the dishwasher. Just scrape off leftovers - this alone can save up to 12 litres per load. Better still, hold off running the dishwasher until it’s full and use eco mode if available.

If washing by hand, use a washing-up bowl instead of running water. You’ll be surprised how much you save.

2. Ditch the soapy scrub

Want a low-water way to clean your BBQ? Try this clever hack: while the grill is still warm, rub half an onion (skewered on a fork) over the bars. It loosens charred food, adds a bit of natural protection, and avoids the need for buckets of water or harsh chemicals.

3. Prep your food the water-wise way

Wash fruit and veg in a bowl rather than under the tap, it saves around 24 litres each time. When prepping sides like potato salad, consider steaming instead of boiling. For pasta salads, cook with just enough water to cover the pasta - the leftover starchy water is perfect for thickening sauces!

4. Chill smart

Instead of reaching for ice trays or running the tap for cold drinks, keep a jug of iced water or tea in the fridge. It’s quicker, more efficient, and cuts down on water waste, especially when entertaining groups.

5. Skip the hose

Cleaning BBQ equipment or outdoor furniture? Swap the hose for a bucket and sponge to save over 100 litres of water. It’s just as effective and far more eco-friendly.

6. Collect rainwater

Installing a water butt lets you store rainwater for garden use or outdoor cleaning. It can save up to 50 litres at a time and helps reduce reliance on hoses, which can use up to 1,000 litres an hour (more than 12 baths!).

If you haven’t already got a water butt, you can purchase one at a discounted rate here.

7. Refresh wisely

After a hot day in the sun, a shower feels essential. Cutting your shower by just two minutes can save up to 30 litres, and you’ll still feel just as refreshed.

8. Plant for the planet

Add drought-tolerant plants like English lavender or 'Blue Spire' to your garden. These beauties thrive in dry conditions and require far less watering, making your garden greener in every way.

9. Engage your BBQ crew

Involve family and friends in water-saving practices. Whether it’s scraping plates, prepping veggies in a bowl, or learning how rainwater can feed your flowerbeds, the more people that join in, the bigger the impact. Together, we can protect our streams for generations to come.

By integrating these small but powerful habits into your BBQ routine, you’re not only helping to conserve water, but you’re also setting an example for your community and making a real difference to the environment this summer.
