Affinity Water to publish open-source environmental data for the public

  • Affinity Water’s Environmental Data Portal provides free open-source environmental data on groundwater levels, rainfall, river flows, lake levels and catchment management monitoring for the public to review and use
  • Over 650 locations across Affinity Water’s supply region and over two decades of data is available to view on the web portal
  • The Web Portal is designed to help build public understanding of the water environment and is available as a free educational tool for schools, citizen science, universities and researchers

The UK’s largest water only company, Affinity Water has announced that it is to publish open-source environmental data for the public. The data is available through the newly launched Environmental Data Web Portal, which provides access to the most recent quality assured environmental data collected by Affinity Water's Water Resources & Environment team.

The Web Portal provides users with a wealth of information related to groundwater levels, rainfall, river flows, lake levels and catchment management monitoring. Users will be able to explore over two decades of environmental data sourced from over 650 locations with an easy-to-use map where they can identify historic and close to present data trends. Data can also be exported and then used for non-commercial purposes.

The Web Portal will help to build public understanding of the water environment and give users an inside view how Affinity Water use data to help protect the local environment. It will provide schools, citizen science, universities and researchers with a powerful and free educational tool to aid in lessons, projects and research papers.

The Web Portal will also serve as a communication channel for regulators and other external stakeholders, providing updates on the status of the chalk aquifer, chalk stream flows and rainfall conditions. With this innovative initiative, Affinity Water is getting out front and demonstrating its commitment to transparency and sustainability.

Ellie Powers, Affinity Water’s Head of Water Resources and Environment said: "We are proud to roll out this timely programme of open-source environmental data for the public. The Portal offers a view on our very extensive environmental monitoring programme, distributed across the three regions, requiring large amounts of resources and constant dedication. The environmental monitoring programme underpins our water resource strategy and through the portal, we expect to receive a good deal of interest amongst our stakeholders and the 3.8 million customers we serve across the SE of England. As the UK’s largest only water Company, we are committed to being transparent and taking care of the environment for our customers and future generations. We want to encourage teachers, researchers, citizens scientists and others interested in our local environment to dip into this data to monitor with us our water resources”.
