Spot the signs and stop water being wasted

Leaks aren’t always as obvious as a burst pipe or dripping tap. Some can go unnoticed, wasting water and increasing your bills over time.

Signs you may have a leak:

  • Damp patches inside or outside your property
  • Unusually lush greenery during dry spells
  • Continuous water flow from taps, toilets or overflow systems
  • A sudden spike in your metered water usage or bills

How to check for a leak

These simple steps can help identify if there’s a leak on your property. For best results, carry out the check overnight or outside of working hours when water use is minimal.

  1. Make sure no water is being used inside the property
  2. Take a meter reading, noting all the numbers
  3. Wait 15 minutes
  4. Take a second meter reading

If the readings are the same, there's no continuous leak. If they differ, you may have a leak.

Where is the leak?

To work out whether the leak is inside or outside your building:

  1. Turn off your internal stop tap
  2. Run the nearest tap – it should flow briefly, then stop, confirming the stop tap is working
  3. Take a new meter reading
  4. Wait 15 minutes
  5. Take another meter reading

If the readings are the same, the leak is likely inside your property. If the readings are different, the leak is likely outside, between your water meter and the stop tap.

If you suspect a leak but can’t locate it, it may be worth seeking professional support.
