World Water Monitoring Day: Looking After Our Rivers and Groundwater Water is essential for life. Yet many people around the world still don’t have clean, safe water. World Water Monitoring Day reminds us that protecting water starts before it reaches our taps. It begins with caring for rivers, streams, and groundwater.
At Affinity Water, we take this seriously. Our Catchment Management team collects samples and checks water quality at the source. We do this before treatment even begins. We also run an environmental monitoring network at more than 650 sites. Here, we measure river flows, groundwater levels, rainfall, and water quality.
Checking water early
Our catchment scientists regularly take samples from rivers and ground water. This helps us see any changes in quality early on. By spotting emerging trends and problems before water reaches our treatment works, we can act quickly. Learn more about how we test and monitor water quality.
Safe water for your tap
All water we supply must meet strict rules set by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI). We test water at every stage – from the source, through treatment, and right up to your tap.
Each year, we carry out over 185,000 tests. These checks make sure your water is always safe, clean, and high quality.
Working with others
Testing shows us where pollution, like pesticides, nitrates and runoff from roads, may enter rivers or groundwater. Farmers and landowners are working collaboratively with us and help to reduce runoff, improve soil health, and protect local water.
We also share results through our Environmental Data Portal. This gives schools, researchers, and local groups free access to over 20 years of environmental data.
Everyone has a role
World Water Monitoring Day reminds us that water connects us all. From scientific testing to local conservation – and even small actions at home – we can all help protect this vital resource.
We’re proud to monitor and protect water every day. Together, we can keep life flowing for future generations.
