Quick & easy BBQ pulled pork rolls + sides that shine

Summer BBQ season is all about flavour, fun, and keeping it simple. Whether you’re hosting friends or cooking for family, these quick recipes will help you get from prep to plate in no time. And the best part? Each side dish and drink comes with a perfect meat pairing, so you can impress without the stress.

Summer BBQs are about big flavours with minimal fuss. This menu is built around a star drink, Pineapple & Jalapeño Infused Tap Water, which pairs perfectly with smoky, tender pork and fresh, vibrant sides.

The star drink: pineapple & jalapeño infused tap water

Why it works: Sweet pineapple balances the spicy kick of jalapeño. It refreshes your palate between bites of rich BBQ pork while echoing the sweet-and-spicy notes of classic BBQ sauce.

Quick recipe:

  • 1 jug of chilled tap water
  • 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks
  • 4–5 slices fresh jalapeño (remove seeds for less heat)
  • Ice cubes

Combine in a jug, chill for 30 minutes, then serve over ice.

Main: BBQ pulled pork rolls

Quick recipe (serves 6–8):

  • 1.5-2 kg pork shoulder
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt ½ tsp pepper
  • 8 soft bread rolls

Method:

  1. Rub pork shoulder with paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Slow cook in a covered roasting dish (150°C) for 4–5 hours, or until tender and easy to shred.
  3. Shred pork with two forks, toss with BBQ sauce, and keep warm.
  4. Fill bread rolls with pork, adding extra BBQ sauce if desired.

Side 1: tangy slaw with fresh herbs

Pairs with drink: The tangy dressing cuts through the pork’s richness, while the pineapple’s sweetness balances the vinegar zing.

Quick recipe:

  • 3 cups shredded cabbage (mix red & green)
  • 1 cup grated carrot
  • ½ cup chopped parsley or coriander
  • ¼ cup mayo
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Mix dressing, toss with veg, and chill before serving.

Side 2: sweetcorn & avocado salad

Pairs with drink: The creamy avocado and sweetcorn echo the sweetness in pineapple while the jalapeño heat contrasts beautifully.

Quick recipe:

  • 2 cups cooked sweetcorn
  • 1 diced avocado
  • ½ red onion, finely chopped
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt to taste

Toss all ingredients gently and serve fresh.

Side 3: baked sweet potato fries

Pairs with drink: Sweet potatoes enhance pineapple’s natural sugars, while the drink’s spice balances the fries’ caramelised edges.

Quick recipe:

  • 3 large sweet potatoes, cut into fries
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • Salt & pepper

Toss fries in oil and seasoning, bake at 200°C / 400°F for 25–30 minutes, turning halfway.
