Build your own water butt and save rainwater easily

A fun family guide to collecting rainwater at home
Ever wondered what happens to all that rain that pours off your roof? Most of it disappears down the drain but with a little creativity, your family can turn it into something amazing. Collecting rainwater is a fun, hands-on way to help the planet, save money, and keep your garden green. Ready to build your very own water butt and Rain Saver System? Let’s get started.

Why catch rainwater?
Rain is nature’s gift, it’s soft, free, and perfect for plants.
By collecting it, you can:
Save tap water (and lower your bills)
Help your garden thrive

Learn about the water cycle together
Do your bit for the planet

Plus, it’s super satisfying to use water you’ve collected yourself.

What you’ll need
You don’t need to buy a water butt or even have one already!
With a few simple bits you might already have at home, you can make your own version:

  • An old large bin
  • OR some recycled containers like:
    • Old dustbins o Large food tins
    •  Empty milk cartons or juice bottles
    •  Buckets or storage tubs

Just give them a good clean before you start, your plants will thank you later!

How to build your rain saver
1. Find the perfect spot
Look for where rain naturally runs, from a roof, shed, or balcony.
If you’ve got gutters, you can attach a rainwater diverter kit so the water flows straight into your container.

No gutters? No problem! Just pop your tubs or jugs where the rain falls the most.

2. Pop on a lid or mesh
Keep out leaves, bugs, and anything else that might take a swim.
You can use an old bit of netting or cloth, just make sure water can still get through.

3. Lift it up
Put your container on a few bricks or a small stand. It’ll make it easier to scoop or pour from later.

Fun ways to use your rainwater
Once you’ve collected some water, you can:

Water your plants and garden (they love it!)
Top up your houseplants Rinse muddy boots, bikes, or garden tools
Fill a birdbath
or mini wildlife pond

Top tip: Fill a watering can instead of using a hose. It’s better for the planet and helps reduce your water bill.

Family fun time
Turn it into a weekend project

  • Give your rainwater bin a name and face, maybe “Splashy the Saver” or “Rainy McBin”
  • Decorate it with paints, stickers, or chalk pens.

It’s a brilliant way to learn about nature, science, and saving water, all while having fun together.

Together, we keep life flowing
By reusing rainwater, you’re helping protect our local rivers, streams, and wildlife.

Small changes at home can make a huge impact, and you’ll feel great knowing your family is helping the planet, one splash at a time.
