Ten water-saving habits to start today

Water saving week is just around the corner, which means it’s the perfect time to think about how we use water at home. Water is one of our most precious resources, and saving it helps the local environment, protects wildlife, and can even lower your water bills.

Here are 10 easy habits you can start today. They don’t take much time, but they make a big difference.

1. Be a laundry legend

Only wash clothes when you have a full load. This means you’ll use your washing machine less often and save lots of water. Choose the eco-setting if your machine has one – it uses less water and energy, saving you money on your bills too!

And remember – not every item needs to be washed after one wear. Some clothes, like jeans or jumpers, can go a few wears before heading to the washing basket.

2. Tap it like a tap guardian

Don’t let the tap run while brushing your teeth or washing your hands. Turning it off for just 2 minutes while brushing can save 12 litres of water a day!

And when you’re getting a drink, don’t run the tap until it’s cold – that wastes water. Instead, keep a jug of water in the fridge so it’s ready (and refreshing!) whenever you need it.

3. Be a shower saviour

Try cutting your shower time by just two minutes. That could save up to 30 litres of water every time. You could even install a FREE water-saving showerhead!

4. Dishwasher defender mode: Activated

Only run the dishwasher when it’s full. And use the eco-wash if there is one. It’s a small change that saves a lot of water over time.

5. Be a leak buster

Dripping taps or toilets that keep running are sneaky water wasters. Fixing small leaks at home could save hundreds of litres every week.

Use our Look and Listen Test Checklist to spot leaks early. If you find a leak, you can book a Leak Visit and one of our expert plumbers will come and fix it for you, completely free of charge!

6. Collect rainwater for your garden

Use a water butt or bucket to collect rainwater. It’s perfect for watering plants and saves on using tap water, especially in summer.

7. Reuse water where you can

Have leftover water in a bottle or glass? Use it to water your houseplants instead of pouring it away. Little actions add up!

8. Water wisely in the garden

Water your garden early in the morning or late in the evening. This stops water from evaporating in the heat and gives plants more time to absorb it.

Use a watering can instead of a hose to control how much water you use – it’s more efficient and kinder to your plants. Even better, use rainwater from a water butt if you have one. It’s free, natural, and perfect for your garden.

9. Use water-smart appliances

If you're upgrading your appliances, look for dishwashers, washing machines, and toilets with a water efficiency label. They do the same job but use much less water.

10. Spread the word!

Share these tips with your friends and family. The more people save water, the bigger the impact we make on the local environment.

Saving water doesn’t have to be hard. By becoming a Laundry Legend, a Tap Guardian, a Shower Saviour, a Dishwasher Defender, or a Leak Buster, you’ll be doing your bit – one drop at a time.
