Drought-proof your garden: Water-saving tips for Spring

Spring is finally here, and it’s National Gardening Week! The days are getting longer, and it’s the perfect time to refresh your garden. But with unpredictable weather and dry spells becoming more common, how can you keep your garden looking lush without using too much water? The good news is you don’t need constant watering to have a beautiful outdoor space. With a few simple changes, you can drought-proof your garden and help the environment at the same time. Here’s how:

1. Collect rainwater in a water butt

A great way to save water is by collecting rainwater. Installing a water butt allows you to store rainwater and save 50 litres of water to be used when your plants need it most. Rainwater is also better for your plants than tap water because it’s free from chemicals.

You can get the chance to win a FREE Tulla Water Butt by taking the My Water Footprint challenge!

2. Choose drought-resistant plants

Some plants thrive with little water, making them perfect for a water-wise garden. Consider adding:

  • Lavender – Looks great and attracts pollinators.
  • Sedum – A low-maintenance, drought-tolerant succulent.
  • Rosemary & thyme – Hardy herbs that add fragrance and flavour to your cooking!

3. Mulch to lock in moisture

Mulching is a simple trick to keep your soil moist for longer. A layer of bark, compost, or straw helps reduce evaporation, meaning you won’t need to water as often. It also suppresses weeds, so it’s a win-win!

4. Use water-less crystals for water retention

Water-less crystals help your soil hold onto moisture for longer. These crystals absorb water and release it slowly to the roots, reducing the need for frequent watering. You can win a FREE Gardening Tool Kit which includes water-less crystals, seeds, a growing disc and water sticks, by taking the My Water Footprint challenge, to help make your garden even more water-efficient!

5. Water plants wisely

Watering your plants at the right time of day makes all the difference, especially in the spring and summer months. Early morning or late evening is best, as less water evaporates in the cooler temperatures. Also, focus on the roots rather than the leaves – this helps plants absorb water more efficiently.
