Central Region
*The long term average (LTA) has been calculated statistically, using the long term data record for this hydrograph. The respective drought zones are used as operational triggers and have been derived using the LTA.
Rainfall in our Central region was well above average in April at 142% of the Long Term Average (LTA). Over the last three months (February and April inclusive), our Central region has received above average rainfall (185% of the LTA) and effective precipitation (234% of the LTA). As a result, soils remain wetter than average, meaning any forthcoming rainfall will provide a greater contribution to groundwater recharge.
Groundwater levels have remained above average through April and continue to increase due to the above average rainfall over the autumn and winter period. Groundwater levels are likely to remain above average over the next six months if rainfall is more than 60% of the LTA. As a result of the above average levels, groundwater will be able to provide additional support to chalk stream flows this summer. Groundwater levels are currently in a lower position than the above average conditions experienced in 2013/14 but in a higher position than 2020/21 at the end of April.
