Our Challenge

We currently provide over 900 million litres of water each day to more than 3.6 million customers in Southeast England.  It’s estimated that by 2040 there will be an extra 600,000 people living in 280,000 new homes in our area.

Our customers are amongst the highest water users in the country, it is vital that we work with them to reduce their water usage now so that we are able to secure a sustainable water supply for the future.

Around 60% of our water supply is taken from underground sources (abstraction) and needs to be replenished each year by winter fall.

We have committed to reducing the amount of water we take from our underground sources to leave more water in the environment.


Where our water comes from

See below the journey that water takes gets to your tap.

Stage 1 - Rain



Evaporated water in the air condenses and form clouds in the sky. When it becomes too heavy, it falls as rain.

Stage 2 - Rivers



When rain falls to the ground it flows into drains or across the ground and eventually makes its way into rivers and streams.

Stage 3 - Evaporation



The sun heats water in the oceans, rivers and lakes and it turns to water vapour. The vapour is so light that it rises.

Stage 4 - Aquifer


Chalk Aquifer

The rain that does not flow into rivers or into the sea seeps slowly through the soil and rocks into the aquifer deep underground in the rock.

Stage 5 - Water Pumping Station


Water Pumping Station

Water is pumped out of the aquifer deep underground and it is treated ready to be sent to homes and businesses.

Stage 6 - Water Distribution


Water Distribution Pipes

The pumping stations pump treated water into distribution pipes so that it reaches your taps in a clean and safe way.

Stage 7 - Your House


Your House

Now you can use the water for cleaning, cooking, drinking - to name a few uses!

What are the benefits of using less water?

We want to leave more water in the environment, whilst making sure we have enough to supply a growing population. If we all use less water, we can help ensure that we secure our future supply for everyone.

If you use less water you are likely to save on your energy bills too! According to the Energy Saving Trust, approximately 21% of a household heating bill relates to heating water for showers, baths and hot water taps. This does not include kettles, washing machines and dishwashers, which use additional energy.
