Preventing future water problems

All pipework within your property is your responsibility, so it really is worth protecting it properly to avoid any serious problems. Watch our Preventing future problems video and wrap up warm this winter.

 

Here are our top tips

 

 

1. Insulate water tanks and lag pipes

Lagging material is available from all good DIY stores, make sure there are no gaps at bends, valves or fittings. Watch Rob show you how in our handy How to guide Lagging your water pipes 

 

2. Pay special attention to water tanks and pipes

Especially in unheated areas like loft spaces and garages, and check insulation in any property likely to be unoccupied for long periods.

3. Fix dripping taps

Even a small trickle can result in a frozen pipe.

 

 

 

4. Find your property’s internal stop tap

Make sure you can turn it off if necessary. Most stop taps are fitted under the kitchen sink and close by turning clockwise. Watch Rob show you how in our handy How to guide How to find your inside stoptap

 
 

5. Check your boiler has been serviced.

To make sure it is running efficiently and to ensure there are no leaks and drips which can freeze.

 
 

6. Minimise draughts from outside

Close doors and windows to unheated parts of the property.

 

7.Leave the heating on low when you are away

Why not ask a friend or neighbour to check your property regularly.

 
 

8. Turn off water at the stop tap

If a property is going to be unoccupied for long periods, turn off the water at the stop tap and consider draining down the system so there is no water left in the pipes.

 

9. Keep a separate supply of drinking water for emergencies.
