World Environment Day is a global event that encourages us all to protect the environment. It’s a chance to think about how we use resources like water and plastic, and how small actions at home can make a big difference for nature.
We can all work together to do what we can to protect our local environment, every single day. From saving water to cutting plastic waste, there are simple changes we can all make.

Why water matters
Clean water is essential for life. We use it to drink, cook, wash, and grow food. But it’s not unlimited. In fact, water supplies in some parts of the UK, are under pressure, especially in drier months, like over the summer. Our supply area is classed as water-stressed.
That’s why saving water and protecting the local environment matters. By using less, we leave more water for nature and future generations. It also saves energy, since water must be pumped, cleaned, and heated before it reaches our taps.

The problem with plastic
Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems and is the theme for this year’s World Environment Day. Single-use plastic bottles, bags, and wrappers often end up in rivers and oceans, where they can take hundreds of years to break down. Along the way, they turn into tiny pieces called microplastics. These can harm animals, pollute water, and even end up in our food.
Switching to reusable items is a great way to reduce this waste. Carry a reusable water bottle, say no to plastic straws, and bring your own bags when shopping. These small steps help reduce plastic in the environment.

The power of recycling
Recycling helps protect the environment by cutting down on waste and saving resources. When we recycle, we use less water and energy than making things from scratch. For example, recycling aluminium uses 95% less energy than making it from raw materials!
Recycling also helps keep rubbish out of rivers, streams, and oceans. This protects wildlife and keeps our water clean. Make sure to follow your local recycling rules and rinse out containers before putting them in the bin.
Easy ways that you can help
Want to make a difference this World Environment Day? Try these simple tips:
- Use a reusable bottle – It’s better for the environment and your pocket.
- Recycle smart – Check what your council collects and avoid putting the wrong items in the recycling bin.
- Save water – Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and fix any drips or leaks. Every drop counts!
- Reuse at home – Use leftover water from boiling vegetables to water your plants.
- Spread the word – Share your tips with friends and family. The more people who join in, the bigger the impact.
Our environmental commitment
We’re the largest water-only supplier in the UK, and we are committed to delivering a high-quality water service to a growing population in a sustainable way.
That's why we're doing our bit to reduce the amount of water we take from the environment by investing in our infrastructure, fixing leaks and restoring rivers.
We're serious about making a difference, so we're keeping track of our progress and reporting back on our environmental commitments.
Also, our Save Our Streams campaign helps people to use less water at home, and we support projects that clean up rivers and improve habitats for wildlife.
We know that every small change adds up. Whether it’s carrying a reusable bottle or turning off the tap, your choices matter. So, this World Environment Day, let’s work together for a greener future. Start with one habit, and watch how it inspires others to join in.
