Women’s Aid is a charity organisation that works to support female survivors and their children after escaping domestic violence. They provide several refugees for women and children affected to come and stay in whilst they receive emotional and practical support. The charity also provides support officers who spend time with the women educating them on bank accounts, benefits, court cases and housing. This all helps the women deal with their trauma and move forward independently to make new positive and healthy relationships.
With the money donated, Women’s Aid took the women and children out for a day to Southend on Sea earlier this year, after receiving feedback from the children that they would like to do this. During the trip, the families experienced the beach, speed boat rides and traditional seaside fish, chips and donuts.
Karla Andrews, Children Family and Young Person Support Officer said: “Going to the beach is a perfect happy holiday for everyone, in my experience, going there lets me unwind and relax. We all here for freedom and cannot give up because of the bad chapters in our lives, we must carry on and create happy memories and chapters. It was a brilliant day, one that the families will never forget. Thank you so much for giving Women’s Aid in Luton this opportunity and making it happen.”
Beverly Taylor, Chair of the Community Review panel said: “We are pleased to have the chance to support Women’s Aid. Affinity Water is a community-focused organisation serving local people and we want to be involved in projects which benefit the communities we serve.”
The next round of funding from Affinity Water’s Community Engagement Programme is now open and will close on 29 October 2018, Community groups and charities can now submit their applications for this round.
Applicants can request support for projects that will benefit the local community, the environment, or make life better for the disadvantaged.
