‘Sap Sewage Savers’ from local water supplier, Affinity Water, were crowned champions of the ‘Learn’ category at the awards ceremony in London on Thursday 27 October.
Thirty teams from the UK and Australia took part in the challenge to find water, sanitation and hygiene solutions for real-life projects in Cambodia. Over the last eight months, the teams have been working hard to find solutions for their chosen projects, which were then presented to a Dragon’s Den style team, including Deborah Meaden, an original judge from BBC Two’s Dragons Den.
The Sap Sewage Savers found a way to improve the HandyPod for schools and floating communities on the Tonle Sap Lake. The team has also worked hard to raise funds by climbing mountains, sponsored cycle challenges as well as hosting pub quizzes and raffles.
Sap Sewage Savers team member, Stephanie Hurry said: “We’ve all really enjoyed being part of Water Innovators and are proud of winning the ‘Best Learn’ category award. We have all learnt lots throughout this process and we would like to thank everyone who has helped, supported or donated throughout our journey. We would definitely encourage other business and teams to join the challenge next year as it has been a great experience. Not only have we developed some great skills but we’ve also helped support the amazing work that WaterAid do.”
At the awards, Deborah Meaden, said: “Water Innovators provides an opportunity for teams from different businesses to not only stretch their imaginations and skills but to help solve some very real problems for millions of people living in Cambodia without clean water and sanitation. The winners cleverly combined their skills and talents to come up with their design and concept. Crucially, the solutions found are not only simple but affordable and sustainable.”
