Water scorcher

Water scorcher!

With the mercury set to soar above a scorching 30c this week, local water company Affinity Water is issuing advice on how to keep cool during the hot weather and providing practical help to save water.

Hot weather can significantly affect the demand for water and the amount needed to be put into supply. However, there are small steps each person can take, that collectively, can reduce the demand for water significantly during hot periods.

  • Keep a jug of water in the fridge to provide cool water rather than running the tap
  • Water pistols are a good way for children to have fun and keep cool
  • Paddling pools can use up to 1,000 litres of water, so to keep kids entertained and cool in hot weather whilst using less water, try paddling pool play dates – inviting their friends to share the same paddling pool. You can also use the water on plants afterwards!
  • Take a short shower instead of a bath - the average shower uses 40 litres less water than a bath.
  • Air your clothes and get another wear out of them, this will save you time and energy on washing too

During hot and dry periods, gardeners are also battling to keep their gardens blooming. However, there are many things they can do to ensure their garden continues to thrive whilst reducing reliance on treated drinking water for plants.

  • Install a water butt for when it rains and use it to water the garden
  • A sprinkler or hose can use up to 1,000 litres of drinking water in just one hour – that’s more than a family of four would use in a day and a half. Keep your garden blooming with a watering can instead
  • Let your lawn go brown! Grass is very hardy and going brown is its natural defence during dry weather. It will bounce back after some rainfall
  • Water the garden in the early morning or evening when it’s cooler and there is less chance of the water evaporating.

Special summer water saving products are also available through Affinity Water’s website, these include:

FREE trigger hose attachments to help direct water to where it’s needed

FREE Swell Gel packs - The gel absorbs water when it rains and releases it to plants when they need it. Great way to save water and time watering!

Free Guide to Water Clever Gardening

Massive discounts on water butts to collect rainwater, which can be used to water the garden or wash the car instead of relying on treated water.
