Lunchbox challenge winners from local schools celebrate National Recycle Week

Students from local schools are celebrating National Recycle Week after being crowned ‘Lunch Box Challenge’ winners by local water supplier, Affinity Water.

Teams from each school received the trophy during a sustainability assembly which recognised their efforts of achieving zero land fill waste, during a visit to Affinity Water’s Environment and Education Centre earlier this year.

Affinity Water’s Education Centre in Bushey Heath welcomes over 6,000 children a year, from over 200 schools. Every child is invited to take part in the Lunch Box Challenge with the aim of minimising the amount of landfill waste generated from packed lunches. Following their lunch, the children sort their left overs into the correct bins and identify the items that are reusable, recyclable and compostable. The remaining landfill waste is then weighed to find out how environmentally conscious the class and the school’s staff have been.

The waste aware children from each school were proud ‘zero wasters’, delighted to receive the Lunch Box Challenge Trophy and happy to share their success with the rest of the school.

Hannah Battram, Environment and Education Manager said: “The Government’s Waste Strategy sets out clear targets for reducing waste by 2020. The Lunch Box Challenge’ is a fun way of introducing a serious subject to children and encouraging them to think about sustainability at an early age.”
