Manor Road Park to close for improvements

Manor Road Park to close for improvements

Affinity Water is working with Luton Borough Council to make vital improvements to the River Lea in Manor Road Park, Luton.

The River Lea is one of the globally rare 210 chalk streams in the world and many of them are located in the Southeast of England. Only 25% of chalk streams are class as ‘good status’ and are needed to help support a wide variety of species.

Work started on Wednesday 21 February and will continue until the middle of May. The works will improve the appearance and accessibility of the riverbank, replacing the existing concrete steps down to the river with a footpath, and provide a better habitat for fish, plants and invertebrates. The project will also deliver multiple benefits for the local community and residents of Luton, providing an improved recreational space for health and wellbeing.

The plans will also allow for higher flows through the river, which will reduce the risk of flooding to local properties.

Councillor Rachel Hopkins, Portfolio Holder for Public Health said: "We’re really pleased these works are taking place. They will be great for the local community and will vastly improve the biodiversity in the area, with the bonus of new play equipment for children. We appreciate the closure will cause some inconvenience for a short while, but we’re certain residents will be pleased with the outcome when the park reopens.”

Jane Everett, Asset Management said: “This project is a great example of delivering multiple benefits for nature, people and business through the collaboration and partnership working with the Luton Lea Catchment Partnership and the Chalk Streams Project. We are excited to start the construction phase of these works and look forward to the realisation of our and Luton Borough Council’s vision for the park”.
