Washing your clothes is important, but are you doing it too much? Many of us throw things in the wash after just one wear, even if they’re not that dirty. The truth is, you might be using more water (and energy) than you need to. Let’s be honest, no one enjoys facing a giant pile of washing at the end of the week, so the less often you need to do laundry, the better!
By washing your clothes less often, you can help save water, protect the local environment, and even make your clothes last longer. So let’s break it down - how often should you actually wash different items of clothing?
T-shirts
Wash after 1 wear
These sit close to your skin and soak up sweat, so it’s best to wash them after each use.
Jeans
Wash after 5–10 wears
Unless they’re stained or smelly, jeans can go a while without washing. Spot clean when you can!
Jumpers and hoodies
Wash after 5–7 wears
If you’re wearing them over a t-shirt, they don’t get as dirty. Hang them up between wears to air out.
Leggings and gym clothes
Wash after 1–2 wears
These fit snug and often get sweaty, especially if you wear them to exercise.
Dresses
Wash after 1–3 wears
It depends on the fabric and how long you wore it. If it still smells fresh and looks clean, it’s fine to wear again.
Pyjamas
Wash after 3–4 wears
You wear them while you sleep, so they don’t get too dirty too fast, unless you sweat a lot.
Underwear and socks
Wash after every wear
No shortcuts here! Always wash these after one use to stay clean.
Coats and jackets
Wash after 1 season or if dirty
Outerwear doesn’t need frequent washing. Spot clean when you can, and wash once or twice a season.
Quick washing water-saving tips:
- Wait for a full load before doing your washing. It saves both water and energy.
- Use the eco setting on your washing machine if it has one.
- Air dry your clothes when possible. It’s gentle on fabrics and saves power.
You don’t have to wash everything after every wear. A little less laundry means big savings in water, energy, and time. It’s good for both the local environment and your wardrobe.
