At Affinity Water, we work hard every day to make sure your tap water is clean, safe, and high quality. But there are still a few myths that make people question what’s coming out of their taps. Here’s the truth behind five of the most common ones.
1. “Bottled water is safer than tap water”
This isn’t true. Tap water in the UK is held to very high safety standards and is tested far more frequently than bottled water. We carry out rigorous testing every day , from source to tap, to make sure your water meets strict regulations.

2. “If I can smell chlorine, it’s not safe”
We add a small amount of chlorine to your water to keep it safe as it travels through the pipes. A faint smell of chlorine is normal and not harmful. You can reduce it by letting the water stand in a jug or chilling it in the fridge. Find out more about the taste of your water here.
3. “Tap water has no flavour”
Actually, it does. The taste of tap water comes from natural minerals picked up as it flows through rocks and soil. If you live in a hard water area, it may taste different from softer water, but it’s still perfectly safe to drink.
4. “Hard water means poor quality”
Hard water simply means it contains more minerals like calcium and magnesium. It may cause more limescale, but it doesn’t affect the safety of your water. In fact, hard water is completely safe to drink and is good for healthy teeth and bones. Learn more about hard water and how you can check for it here.
5. “Filtered water is always better”
Our tap water is already safe and ready to drink. Filters can improve taste or remove specific minerals, but they aren’t necessary for safety. Whether you use one is a personal choice, not a requirement. See how we make sure your water is safe through our sampling process here:
