‘Challenge:Water’ – a joint initiative by WaterAid and Affinity Water is now in its third year and pits teams against each other to develop real solutions to address global water resource issues, starting with their own community.
Teams from Simon Balle All Through School in Hertford, Loreto College in St Albans, Kings Langley School in Kings Langley and Barnwell School in Stevenage went head to head to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges from across the water industry.
Team ‘Without a Drought’ from Barnwell School were crowned the Challenge:Water champions scooping a trophy and £500 for their school after their project resulted in massive water savings amongst other students.
Team ‘H2 Go’ from Simon Balle All Through School in Hertford came a close second in the competition with their app design to control water use and temperatures in baths.
All schools who took part can also now apply for the prestigious Silver CREST Award. CREST is a UK Science award scheme managed by the British Science Association that recognises success and enables students to build their skills and demonstrate personal achievement. CREST has been found to improve GSCE grades and increased interest in continuing Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
‘Challenge: Water’ launched three years ago in Northwest London and the Home Counties, to encourage young people to come up with pioneering solutions to help people to save water. The challenge also connects schools with water experts in the key STEM areas and is closely linked to the national curriculum.
Along the way, the four teams learnt how local actions can have a global impact. During sessions, the children were encouraged to use games, debates, films and activities to better understand why water conservation is such a crucial issue in the UK and around the world.

The students involved have gained valuable industry experience, enhanced their employability skills and used their creativity to develop innovative solutions to save water. It is important to inspire young people to consider the range of opportunities that the water industry can offer.”
