This is a real-life challenge set by WaterAid, where employees from Affinity Water are showing their support. Affinity Water are among many other teams from the UK, Australia and the USA in devising cutting edge solutions to present to the international charity for its programme in Cambodia, whilst also raising money for Water Aid’s lifesaving work.
As part of the ‘Water Innovators’ challenge, a group from Affinity Water have created a plan to improve the Handypod design that assists with the sanitation aspect of the challenge. This aim of the design is to help improve the waste water treatment system for an institutional setting, which would mostly be floating schools.
Stephanie Hurry, Affinity Water Asset Technician said: “We were tasked with coming up with recommendations to improve the Handypod design. It had to be affordable and technically sound, with a plan to maintain the infrastructure. We also had to prepare, submit and present a fundraising activity business pitch.”
This October, WaterAid experts will judge these projects and the winning ideas will be given to WaterAid Cambodia, with the opportunity for some to be put into action and help transform lives, in some of the country’s poorest communities.
Water Aid stated they were “thrilled” that the Affinity Water team got through to the next round. They have been given £300 seed funding from the panel and now need to raise £3,000 through fundraising activities for the deadline in September.
Isabelle Herszenhorn, Innovation and Strategic Engagement Team Leader at WaterAid said:
“Four million people in the country lack access to clean water while more than nine million have nowhere safe to go to the toilet. WaterAid works to develop low-cost effective solutions that can easily be maintained by the communities, and we’re sure that Affinity Water is onto a winning idea – but they will have to try and beat the rest of the competition and deliver the best activity to be in with a chance of winning Water Innovators 2016.”

Water Innovators aims are to develop professional and core business skills, whilst teams compete to solve real problems from the communities where WaterAid operates. In addition, all teams are aiming to raise a minimum of £3,000 each. To find out more about Water Innovators 2016 visit www.wateraid.org/uk/waterinnovators
