Leading infrastructure innovator Ann Bishop joins the Board of Affinity Water

Ann Bishop, founder and until recently Director of Indepen, has been appointed to the Board of Affinity Water as a non-executive Director.

Ann Bishop has worked for more than thirty years with regulated infrastructure businesses and regulators in the UK and internationally. Indepen is known for promoting constructive challenges to the status quo and has convened and chaired cross disciplinary groups to address controversial issues in the public, private and third sectors.

Pauline Walsh, CEO of Affinity Water welcomed Ann Bishop to the Board and said: “Ann has a wealth of governance experience. She has worked with boards and leading panels to review and challenge the thinking, strategies and plans of infrastructure businesses. She will bring her proven expertise to the Affinity Boardroom and I welcome her appointment. These are challenging times and Ann will help us meet those challenges head on for the communities we serve. The need to protect the environment has never been greater and Ann’s vision will ensure we set the pace on this for our customers and for the industry more widely.”

Tony Cocker, Chairman of Affinity Water praised Ann Bishop’s strategic thinking and implementation skills across infrastructure businesses. He said: “Ann has a proven track record in the infrastructure business and she is an impressive innovator. She is going to hit the ground running at Affinity Water and help us to improve our service delivery to our customers in the future, and to meet the challenges that global warming and scarce water resources present. I welcome her appointment.”

Ann Bishop said she would be ensuring high standards of governance as a member of the Affinity Board. She said: “I am delighted to be joining the Board of Affinity Water at such a crucial time for the water sector as it rises to meet national and local challenges, including water resources in the South East and the need to deliver greater environmental and social value, while ensuring that bills remain affordable. Those involved in the provision of essential services have responsibilities and the boards of those organisations must lead on this – setting and demonstrating their commitment to high standards of governance and conduct. I know how seriously the Directors of Affinity Water take this responsibility and look forward to playing my part.”

Ann Bishop is Chair of the Customer Engagement Group for UK Power Networks. She is also a member of the Leeds Beckett University Board and Chair of the Senior Staff Remuneration Committee. Ann previously served as Deputy Chair of Opera North, Ambassador for Wellbeing of Women, a member of the Ofwat expert panel and a Commissioner on the London First Infrastructure Commission.

Ann Bishop worked in the Strategy Group in Deloitte’s management consultancy division, working in a range of sectors, including financial services, high street retail, food manufacturing, design engineering and publishing. This followed a career in marketing and corporate finance with Natwest Investment Bank and Chase Manhattan Bank NA and in industrial relations for Overseas Containers Ltd.

Ann Bishop will take up her appointment on 1st April 2020.
