27 September 18
On National Refill Day, this Thursday 27 September, people are being urged to ditch single use plastic water bottles and switch to a reusable water bottle, as part of a national day of action to cut plastic pollution.
The first ever National Refill Day comes as it’s revealed that an overwhelming majority of the British public are concerned about plastic pollution. The survey, by One Poll commissioned by City to Sea, shows that 85% of the public are worried about the impact of plastic pollution in the environment, and indicates that more people than ever are switching to a reusable bottle, instead of buying bottles of water in shops.
7 out of 10 people surveyed in the South East this month now use a reusable water bottle at least sometimes, when outside the home.
Single-use plastic bottles are expensive to produce and use up valuable natural resources to make and transport. Many are thrown away and end up polluting our rivers and seas. If just one in 10 Brits refilled just once a week, we’d save around 340 million plastic bottles a year.
Refill, City to Sea’s award-winning campaign aims to help people ditch single-use water bottles in favour of using a reusable bottle by making it easier to get it refilled on the go.
There are now over 12,000 Refill Stations across the UK, where participating cafes, bars, restaurants, banks, galleries, museums and businesses will welcome people to come in and fill their bottle for FREE, even without a purchase.
For information on where to find Refill Stations, which display a sticker to show they are part of the campaign, visit www.refill.org.uk and download the free Refill app.
Amanda Reynolds, Affinity Water’s Customer Relations Director said: “With the top-quality drinking water we provide from the tap costing a little over a penny (1.36p) for 10 litres, you can save a lot of money drinking tap water, instead of bottled water, and you will help the environment too!”
Don’t forget to regularly wash your reusable bottle!
According to Refill, recent research has found that many people are not washing their reusable bottles as often as they should. Please be careful to wash bottles as often as you would a glass at home.
When refilling a bottle, you should not touch the tap or jug with the bottle. If you feel a Refill Station is unhygienic, please report it to Refill through the feedback section of the app.
We don’t recommend refilling a bottle at a location if it does not have a food hygiene rating of four or five. For more information please see: https://www.food.gov.uk/safety-hygiene/food-hygiene-rating-scheme.
