Species Identification Workshops (Surrey Wildlife Trust)

Surrey Wildlife Trust is one of 46 wildlife trusts working across the UK. The 2016 State of Surrey’s Nature report revealed that a third of the country’s wildlife is now locally extinct or on the verge of extinction. Surrey Wildlife Trust is committed to stopping this decline and is relying on local volunteers to help collect vital data to fully understand this ecological change and improve the condition of the wildlife and habitats.

The funding will provide a series of workshops for the volunteers on a range of species including insects, mammals and plant life.

Swingbridge Community Boats

Swingbridge Community Boats is run by Surrey Care Trust and is a unique project which combines environmental conservation work with mentored learning opportunities for vulnerable people.

The organisation operates two narrowboats: one providing enrichment trips for the elderly or vulnerable/disabled children; the other performing conservation work along the River Wey (from Guildford to Weybridge), River Thames (from Staines to Molesey) and the Basingstoke Canal (in the Woking area). Some of the work includes: removing overgrown vegetation, collecting litter, restoring wetlands and developing biodiverse wildlife habitats.

The funding would provide three weeks of boat trips in the summer or autumn of 2019.
